Helpful tips for starting a project
Here are some things to consider before beginning a project.
Copy / Text
Copy is just another work for text. In order to begin a print design project we’ll need the copy you’d like to include on the piece. It’s always best if the copy is as complete as possible and has been reviewed by key stakeholders before submitting to the marketing team. This doesn’t mean minor copy changes can’t be made during the design process. However, the more complete the copy is beforehand, the easier the design process will be and the faster the piece will be completed.
Share the copy via Google Docs
Using Google Docs is the preferred way to share your project copy. It helps keep the design process more organized and provides a single location where the copy can be edited and shared.
Sending copy that’s already “laid out”
There’s no need to send us copy that’s heavily formatted our laid out in a Google Doc. We much more prefer copy with only the bare minimum of formatting to show content hierarchy.
Updating existing marketing pieces
For updates to existing design pieces, if there are only a few minor very updates, sending those within the body of an email and explaining the changes is fine. However, if there are more than two to three minor updates, please create a Google Doc that clearly lists out the updates. An annotated version of the original PDF design file is also an option, so long as the updates are not too extensive and very clearly stated.
Design assets
Do you have images or other graphics elements you’d like to use on your marketing piece? Let us know and we’ll do our best to integrate those assets into the design. We ask that you place the assets on a Google Drive and share with us.
Timeline
When do you need your project completed? The earlier we receive your request the better. The time it takes to complete a project depends on a number of factors including:
- Our current workload
- The complexity of the project
- How many design revisions there are including copy changes
- How responsive the campus client is with feedback and questions from the marketing team.
Project times vary from as little as two weeks, if the copy comes to us complete and there are minimal rounds of revisions, to as long as three months if there are multiple rounds of revisions and copy changes.
The time it takes to create a projects does not include printing time. It is up to the client to work directly with the Print Services once the design is ready to be printed.
If you’re ready to get started on a project, please contact Tony Johnson. Typically, an email is all that’s needed to get started. For more complex projects, a phone call or in-person meeting with the design team may be needed.
